Anacortes, WA
A half marathon, 5K and Kids Fun Run through downtown Anacortes and its waterfront — the town named for Annie Curtis — on a Sunday morning in May.
About the race
A new race for 2027!
Anacortes is named for Annie! In 1876 the railroad surveyor Amos Bowman set out to build a home on Fidalgo Island, and when the town’s post office opened in 1879 it took his wife’s maiden name — Annie Curtis — “slightly corrupted in the interest of euphony.” Anne “Annie” Bonfield Curtis Bowman had married Amos in California in 1871 and come north with him. The town that grew up around that post office has carried her name ever since, and she is buried at Grand View Cemetery here in town.
Everything else is the Orca setup you already know: chip timing, a course that’s marked properly, aid stations with people who cheer, a finish line worth running at, and a cute downtown to wander through afterwards. Proceeds support the Anacortes Family Center and the Anacortes Youth Sports Coalition.
